Soil type
You want to use soil with good drainage.
Be sure to plant on soil without clay as it will waterlog not good for the Capsicum.
Nursery/Seedling Stage
•It is important to understand seedling stage and how to do it perfectly, I recommend the use of seedling trays but the alternative is a seed bed if you cannot get seedling trays.
Make the nursery with fine soil.
•The nursery bed should be 50 cm by say, 10 m, depending on how many seedlings you want to
plant.
•Makesure that the top soil very fine.
•Draw lines acrossthe bed 10 cm apart, and plant EACH SEED 3cm apart at a depth of a few
mm.
•Coverloosely with soil.
•Then finally cover the bed with dry grass. 2
•Water for the bed twice per day for 4 days, after which time, the seeds should have germinated
N.B.-DONT USE MANURE, DONT USE ANY FERTILISER AT THIS STAGE.
The goal is to achieve atleast 98%germination
Land Preparation
•Make 1m wide beds, with 0.5m walking space between the beds
•On the beds, make planting holes 40 cm apart on both sides of the bed. The holes should be about
25cm deep
•Mix the soil inside each hole very well with 7 gms DAP, (7gms is about one bottletop of coca cola)
•Irrigate well (drip is a good advantage)
•Transplanting should be done a day after.
Transplanting
•Transplant at a spacing of 100cm row to row apart and 40 cm plant to plant.
At this stage we only need to water
•Water the plants daily. You can mulch and use 0.5L daily, or if not mulched you
can give 1 litre daily
Fertilizers, Pests and Disease Control
•On a weekly basis, do spray weekly the following chemicals, ridomil, dursban,
mixed together (I use 40gms of ridomil and 20mls of dursban per 20 litre knapsack)
How many seedlings can I plant in one acre?
One acre can accommodate 11,000 seedlings well.
A hectare can accommodate 23,000 seedlings, 1 seedling can give you 30 kilos entire life-a year or so.
How many months before harvesting?
The seedlings will take about 45 days in the seed bed. After transplanting,it will take another 55 days to harvest.
What climatic conditions are ideal for Hoho?
Regions with temperatures between 18-32 C.
When do I need to prepare the field for transplanting?
A week before transplanting is ideal
When should I start hardening the seedlings for transplanting?
At day 30-45
